WORLD PREMIERE: Opera to Go! in-conjunction with Song of Houston performs a World Premiere at Talento Bilingüe de Houston

In conjunction with Song of Houston,  Opera to Go! will present HGO's forty-ninth world premiere, Past the Checkpoints, at Talento Bilingüe de Houston. The work is based on the experience of David Moreno, a trumpeter from the University of Texas Pan America's award-winning ensemble Mariachi Aztlán. The commission idea began with Lisa Falkenberg's 2010 Houston Chronicle article about Moreno, published while he was in Houston with Mariachi Aztlán to perform in HGO's Cruzar la Cara de la Luna/To Cross the Face of the Moon in December 2010.  (Falkenberg followed up her story with a second Houston Chronicle article published on 2/8/13.) David's inspiring story caught the attention of HGO's former general director, Anthony Freud, and HGOco Director Sandra Bernhard, who agreed that it would be a perfect subject upon which to base an opera for young adults. David Hanlon--an alumnus of the Houston Grand Opera Studio and music director of Cruzar--was asked to compose the music. Writer Joann Farías created the libretto, a universal story about courage and truth based on Moreno's real-life story.
